Anxiety or Fears
Anxiety can manifest in several ways. Whether you struggle with chronic or situation-specific anxiety, we will work with you in a compassionate and intelligent way to investigate the root cause, how it manifests, and the ways in which it is affecting your life.
During our therapy sessions, we’ll sensitively identify current triggers and teach you methods to cope with them more effectively. Since anxiety can manifest as physical symptoms, as well as overwhelming and irrational thoughts, we employ a combination of both somatic (body-based) and cognitive approaches. Find out more about anxiety counseling here.
Depression:
Like anxiety, depression can be a symptom of many underlying issues and it reveals itself differently in different people. Whether you are struggling with feelings of deep sadness, a lack of motivation, or more covert forms of depression, our therapists can work with you to get to the heart of the matter while also exploring ways to help you move forward in a constructive manner.
Throughout years of experience working with different clients, we have found sensitive, somatic approaches as well as cognitive interventions to be the most effective. They allow us to enable you to find ways to release the weight of the depression and live your best life. Learn more about depression counseling here.
Emotional Abuse:
Emotional abuse is often invisible but its impact can be devastating, because it disregards or devalues you in ways that can cause a profound loss of self-esteem, eroded confidence, and a blurring of identity. If you find yourself walking on eggshells around your partner or parent, constantly worrying about being criticized or facing the silent treatment without knowing what you did wrong, you may be in an emotionally abusive relationship.
These abusive relationships can have long-lasting effects on the way you view yourself and your place in the world. They can erode your sense of individuality and often go hand in hand with gaslighting, which may even cause you to question your own sanity. Unfortunately, just leaving an abusive relationship is not enough to heal the emotional wounds that you're left with. The devastating trauma of such a relationship can leave invisible scars that live deep within you. However, we know from experience that they can most definitely be healed.
At Haven MHC, we bring compassion, hope, and sensitivity to exploring and working through your trauma while nurturing your sense of self-acceptance, compassion, and love. Find out more about trauma counseling here.
Anger Management:
Difficulties with anger management can often be linked to a lack of proper modeling during childhood, trauma, and certain difficult life circumstances. If you struggle with anger issues and anger management, we’ll work with you to explore the root of your anger, and how the anger may be trying to help protect or help you have your needs met (albeit with adverse effects!).
We can also work with you to better understand what triggers your anger and to help you to learn ways to manage it more constructively. This will allow you to deal with it in a more beneficial manner.
Borderline Personality Disorder:
One of the most painful experiences anyone can face is to live in fear of losing connection and being abandoned or rejected. If you find yourself struggling to maintain healthy relationships, feeling like it’s always "too much" and inadvertently pushing people away as you frantically try to keep them close, we can help. Our therapy team can assist you to explore those parts of your psyche that demonstrate a need for connection while simultaneously resulting in an urge to push people away, due to the sense of fear or panic that can ensue when you connect.
This push/pull emotional process can be exhausting for both you and your loved ones. At Haven MHC, we provide a safe space for you to explore these struggles and fears, while learning to develop a sense of safety and define personal boundaries, both individually and in your relationships. Find out more.
Dissociative Disorders:
Dissociation is often the result of stored childhood trauma. It is the body and brain's way of protecting us in overwhelming situations that we are unable to escape or cope with at the time of the event. Our team uses a trauma-sensitive methodology to work with clients who struggle with dissociation.
Whether you have periods of zoning out and "losing time" or you’re aware of parts of your unique self as “distinct”, we will work with you to navigate through the symptoms of dissociation and to look at the function it serves. Understanding that there is a range of ways in which dissociative disorders can manifest, we will work with you in an open, non-judgmental, and compassionate way.
We aim to understand your individual experience without making assumptions or imposing any preconceived notions. Treatment begins with creating an atmosphere of safety and openness between us, so that we can begin exploring the issues with the goal of helping you to gain a sense of control and integration.
Divorce and relationships
Divorce is one of the most life-altering experiences that anyone can have in their adult life. While leaving an unhealthy relationship may bring with it a sense of relief, this is often coupled with a profound grief and sadness for the many hopes and dreams that were never realized. There are also the losses to deal with, which may come in the form of relationships, finances, or a sense of identity.
Navigating a divorce is difficult and painful. It can also feel very solitary and extremely lonely. At Haven MHC, we walk alongside you with compassion, caring, and hope while you work through all the emotions and difficulties that come with a divorce. We all need support at various times in our lives, but it is especially crucial while going through this devastating life experience. When you work with us, we’ll help you to understand that, despite your current pain, a healthy, constructive, and happy future is within reach.
Loss or Grief
When we think of loss, we often think of death. And living in a post-COVID world, we have undoubtedly all been exposed to far more death than ever before. While we mourn those who have passed, we may sometimes overlook other types of loss and its accompanying grief in the process.
Many life experiences can cause us a sense of loss. Sometimes loss and grief stem from estranged relationships or friendships, abandonment or divorce, financial traumas, moving away from a loved one, infertility or miscarriage, as well as the loss of time due to all the wishes and dreams that were never realized.
If you're feeling the grief of loss, allow us to support you as you learn to be with the grief, to soothe and contain the feelings, while also attending to the many needs that can arise as a result. We approach grief with the understanding and belief that you don't have to be fully healed, nor do you need to fully transcend your loss, to flourish.
Parenting
Parenting looks very different now than it did when you were a child. The constantly changing landscape of social media and the challenges that come with parenthood are creating unprecedented struggles for many parents. It’s not uncommon for parents today to feel helpless, out of touch, or even lost due to the issues that we are seeing in children and adolescents.
At Haven MHC we will work with you to find proactive and positive ways to develop a healthier relationship with your children while instilling responsibility, citizenship, and appropriate boundaries for their safety and health. With mental health concerns on the rise for our youngsters, we cannot simply turn a blind eye to the challenges and hope that they'll pass. If you notice changes in your children's behavior, it may be worth seeking therapy individually or for the whole family.
Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse survivors can face the impact of their trauma long after the danger has passed. Trauma is often held in the body and can manifest in a variety of ways. The essence of it is a felt sense of danger and a lack of safety. If you've been the victim of sexual abuse, you might feel disconnected from your body or unable to engage with people in social settings. Whatever the impact, healing is possible.
At Haven MHC we can work with you to process trauma in a gentle, safe, and compassionate way using somatic (body-based) modalities that will allow you to release the trauma from its roots. We take it as a sacred trust and a privilege when clients come to us seeking support and healing from such traumatic experiences and we are honored to walk with you along the path toward wholeness.
SOMATIC THERAPY
Somatic therapy is a type of body-centered therapy that focuses on the relationship between the mind and body and incorporates psychotherapy and physical techniques into the individual healing process. It can help you release the stored trauma and stress that is impairing your physical and emotional well-being.
Somatic therapy can benefit individuals suffering from anxiety, sadness, grief, addiction, and relationship concerns, as well as trauma and abuse-related issues. If you have not been able to find relief from chronic physical discomfort, digestive disorders, or other medical problems, you may potentially benefit from somatic therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) makes use of behavioral concepts to help patients reinforce positive actions. We can assist you to put an end to unpleasant mental intrusions by utilizing CBT. This is accomplished by arming you with the knowledge necessary to identify potential triggers and effective strategies for processing undesirable emotions before they gain a hold.
The fundamental assumption of cognitive behavioral therapy is that thoughts precede moods and that both are intimately connected to your surroundings, physiological reactions, and subsequent behavior. As a result, modifying an emerging idea in a particular situation has the potential to alter your emotions, behaviors, and bodily reactions.
